There are more than 3,000 different types of spiders that can be found in North American homes. All species of spiders are predatory in that they hunt small insects and will travel to anywhere that they prey is – including inside of your home. Some of the more scary spiders that Klamath Falls residents encounter are:
• Black Widow – Black widows can be easily identified by the notorious red hourglass symbol that is on the underside of their thorax. These spiders will usually spin a chaotic looking web at ground-level in areas that offer cover such as woodpiles and undisturbed boxes. When the box or wood is carried into the home, the back widow comes with it. Black widow spiders prefer to avoid humans and stay hidden from view. However, if a person disturbs where the black widow spider has been hiding and the spider feels threatened, it will bite. They inject a neurotoxic venom when they bite, causing the bite to be very painful. Children and the elderly are especially susceptible to having an adverse reaction to a black widow spider bite.
• Hobo – It is impossible to identify a hobo spider without a microscope. Their anatomy and physical characteristics are similar to other benign species of spiders and are often misidentified. Hobo spiders will make a funnel shaped structure and wait at the smaller end for prey to bumble in. While the hobo spider is known for being aggressive, they prefer to avoid contact with human. Typically, a hobo spider bite occurs when a human has accidently picked up the Hobo spider on a piece of wood, or, has put their foot inside of a shoe where a Hobo spider is hiding. Their venom will cause significant pain and necrosis.
